Beautifully crafted  title sequence by Beijing visual designer Zaoeyo (aka Xiaolin Zeng, aka Mike Zeng) detailing insects constructed with glassy, organic materials.

Another great piece from Quentin Baillieux (Parallel) with animation from Florent Remize. There’s a very continental retro styling here similar to the Pernod advert also on Sketchpad.

So this is how they make Swiss/Italian watches! A really nice animation playing on scale from Parallel. Also a great piece of sound design from Alexandre Poirier which really adds to the whole atmosphere.

William Hill

Often seen as part bumpers during football matches these William Hill adverts combine live action and lots of different styles but it’s the comic strip overlays that appeal most to me.

South Wales Metro

South Wales is getting a new metro system and Bomper studio have animated it’s proposed route through a white minimalist environment. Nice subtle animations and smooth camera moves make a technical subject a visually pleasing watch.

The New Old World

Not so keen on the CGI steam-punk book opening, but the photo manipulation using a camera mapping technique on 3D surfaces by Alexey Zakharov is interesting. More of a breakdown can be found on his behance page here.

Infinate Doom

GoldenWolf design”Infinite Doom” as an ident for Adult Swim’s Venture Bros show. An infinate zoom, simply using a series of illustrations with a straight camera pan. Nice illustrations from clever angles add interest to very straight-forward animation.

My Cambridge

Nice bit of tracking with some choice icons and trapcode work.

Race for The White House

Dave Penn directed this animation (along with Jellyfish and Sixfingers) for a six-part CNN documentary series concerned with what went on behind the scenes during key presidential campaigns in U.S. history. Sponge paint mattes provide nice transitions for cleverly laid out photographs.

The New Promised Land

Series of animated documents  made for a web documentary that tells the story of 5 young Syrian refugees who risked it all for a chance to start over. Treated stills and documents manage to sustain the long sequences.

Pernod Ricard TV

Not the newest of films here, but the designers at Parallel managed to combine actual products with collage and simple figures within a cleverly lit scene to create a unique short commercial.

Nike – Huarache V Creator

Excellent promo for Nike by ECD Jonathan Notaro and the Brand New School. It mixes drawn animation with CG elements to produce this gritty animation with a limited colour palette.

Information is precious

This is na lovely little character piece from Gorilla Gorilla! for Informa about keeping online information safe.

Samsung 837 Installation – Tech NYC

Analytical, diagrammatic video in a 3D space by Jonathan Kim.  Blueprints, lines and tech overlays provide a hi-res feel for this square installation.

The Flynn

Commercial for New York appartment blocks by Art & Graft. This strong graphic look with bright lens flares, realistic shadows and reflections and a painterly finish was created by Art and Graft and has a rare quality of equally impressive animation. Gunpowder

Small titles for Gunpowder a new advertising creative showcase. Animated in 2D and 3D using a variety of techniques by Art & Graft, they create a rich and modern title.

W Idents

Art & Graft produce a series of idents for the newly Branded W freeview TV station (formerly UKTV). Using a constant camera speed they’ve created an infinite tunnel, with a diamond matte opening between each and tracked letterforms.

NSPCC : Pete's Story

Animated by Daniel Bruson repainting every frame in watercolour and then compositing it digitally. The Animation Breakdown on vimeo illustrates his process. Deep, rich and heavily textured.

Ridley Scott’s promo for “Prophets of Science Fiction” has been brought to life by Prologue by tracking the graphics to the table top, transitioning to the CGI versions of his notes, in a techy intricate manner.

This title gets us up to speed quickly with the recent history of Ukriane, well at least how the story goes in the West. It’s another excellent piece of work from Patrick Claire

Been meaning to post this one for a while. It’s from Elastic TV. A great mix of the banal and the political.

2015 Women’s World Cup

STATE Design‘s promo for the FOX Sports coverage of the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada featuring largely still images but animated into a superb mix with sketched lines and ink splashes and ooddles of humour.

Artistic brush strokes combined with precision lines give an impressive creative feel to this car advert. Made by Block and Tackle with a good “how it was done” interview on Motionographer.

Unilever idents

From ‘Not to Scale’ and ‘Mirari’, these really nice short animations were commissioned by Ogilvy London showcasing Unilever’s messaging around sustainability.

Not to Scale, New York produced these tasty idents for Skoda’s sponsorship of the race. Directed by Colin Hesterly

Monstro redefine the heavily saturated tech video with an epic galactic painted feel. Data has never felt so orange.

California Inspires Me: Rashida Jones

Nexus animator Jacking Cunningham animates the story of Rashida Jones, the actress growing up in California. The film uses flat, front, also isometric angle animation with simple pencil lines and block sun-tinted colours.

SBS Documentary

Different, almost unnoticeable take on the pop-up book idea. Nice tracking of a plane with complex CGI makes for a nice mix.

The Idea Machine

CGI model of an imaginary machine creating ideas. Bright colours and cute extras add a light charm to a heavy metal object.

HBO The Heist

MK12’s programme graphics for the Heist. Using a blueprint plan and “Catch Me If You Can” style text transitions.

Particle Fever

MK12’s work on Particle Fever, a documentary about CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, the Higgs boson, and people much smarter than ourselves. It involves numerous graphics throughout the film of differing techniques.

Passion Pictures works with the popular children’s book illustrator Oliver Jeffers to create animated advert’s for Kinder Bueno. A charming style with naive text recreate the excellence found in his stories.

Paypal Fast, Simple and Secure

Paypal’s TV advert tracks doodles around the presenter to animate ideas in a fun sketchy way. A white, clean room behind gives it an airy, light feel.

ANA "Service"

William Russell directs animated spots for ANA, using lines very cleverly and beautifully constructed. Another lines and dots style film like “Designed by Apple”, it uses flight paths as a concept to make the connections.

Soilconsweb

A very square geometric take on an infographic with a evening summers light cast over the film. A different perspective on a common film theme by Uli Henrik Streckenbach, the german animator responsible for this fishing film.

Dissidentia Brand Strategy

Cyril Calgaro animates another infographic of sorts with a very simple structure. Similar to the apple film Designed in Apple by California the film uses dots and lines animated in a physical way along with a serif font to create a simple but stylish film.

Peditro Store

Cyril Calgrao directs a simple animated infographic with a nice colour scheme and subtle but thought-out animation to create a cost-effect and pleasant infographic.

White Out

Hand drawn, inked and painted frame-by-frame, there is no digital cheating here. Over 2000 rotoscoped paintings on a variety of paper surfaces make Jeff Sher’s winter animation.

The Persuit of Brilliance

Oliver Sin returns with sounds recorded from an evening arranged by the popular online blog ‘It’s Nice That’ in collaboration with HTC. The animations are simple but nicely coloured with a hand drawn edge effect adding interest to the basic shapes.

Assaf Benharroch illustrates a painterly animated piece, with an imaginative use of lighting and painterly textures.
 

Martini Racing

Using flat colours to create a mix of 3D and 2D with transitions separating it out from a crowded genre of similar films. Screen print texture added to give it that old racing poster feel too.

British Library – What is Magna Carta?

First film of two commissioned by the British Library, and narrated by Monty Python’s Terry Jones, this small animation investigates how the document came to be under the rule of Bad King John. Animated by Gergely Wootsch.

Impressive animated sequence by young Swiss graduate Guillaume Mégroz, in search of his internship. Flat infographic styles, but with a new colour palette and hand-drawn edge with well-thought out animation give it a fresh approach.

Manhunt

Opening Title sequence of HBOs Documentary; MANHUNT. The show documented the two decade hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Lots of documents and ink bleeds.

FITC Toyko 2015 Titles

Techno-glitchy title sequence for the Tokyo FITC conference. The making-of process reel found here is another interesting watch as it mixes a variety of 3D, code and web processes to create the unusual opener.

D&AD – 2014 Title Sequence

The Mill create another machine driven title sequence, this time for the D&AD awards. Photorealistic CGI models based around their pencil motif, animate in a variety of mouse-trap style movements to reveal logos of  the awards supporters.

Interesting tale with limited animation but with great visuals and lighting directed by W. Scott Forbes.

Into the Woods

Another nice animation from the New York times series on Modern Love by Stuart Langfield. Simple animated elements connect to a narrative voiceover by pinpointing individual phrases or words to animate. Works well as a simple serious alternative to the infographic.

NPR – Brains on Play

A playful informative film by the talented Xaver Xylophon for the National Public Radio. It mixes graphics with comedy in a digital painted style much like his other film “For Hire Bangalore Rickshaw

Cymatics

No post production or VFX apparently, it’s all real. There’s an accompanying making of if you don’t believe me. Interesting results by Nigel Stanford.

The Lego Movie

Stop motion title sequence for the ending of the Lego Movie. Nice layout, positioning and camera movement give a childish subject a mature look.

Nicely shot and conceived advert for the UK Goverment’s promotion of the latest broadband services coming our way.

Marco Polo titles

Mill+ co-director Ben Smith and co-director Bryce Wymer teamed up with Netflix to create the title sequence for Marco Polo and most appears to be achieved on camera but with a lot of planning.

Dave Fothergill experiments with the Maya plugin “Miarmy” used in many an action film. Animations, collisions and rag-doll effects make for oddly soothing viewing.

Seton – Welcome to Humancare

A cut paper style often seen in still graphics, but rarely animated this way. Technically well made by CHRLX, with a bigger budget than you might imagine. The action is fast and engaging and the duration is to the point.
