Remember Its Waterproof – Dont Assume

One of 6 short films by Slurpy Studios for RIW (Remember It’s Waterproof).
Each film was created to explore a common mistake in the waterproofing process, and to show architects and builders the potential consequences of not doing it properly. They are a funny and tongue in cheek way of talking about quite a serious and technical problem.
They are designed in a 1950’s ‘UPA’ style, with strong character profiles, no straight lines and a carefully designed colour palette. The animation is fun and cartoony, with ‘rubber-hose’ limbs.

BBC Education – Every Element of Wonder

BBC Education has got a beautiful promo for 2017. It mixes live action with 3d, animation… all around the periodic element table. Directed by weareflink.

The Kitchen

Paris VFX powerhouse Unit Image, Partizan director Antoine Bardou-Jacquet and agency BETC combine forces for a VFX rampage through a French kitchen to make the case for the quality of TV channels available on Canal+.

Don’t blink

Apple launches their iPhone 7 and new watch with a short 107 second summary of their conference in this video. It’s as simplistic as you’d expect from an Apple video, but always done very well. You can find out more about it’s cleverness here.

Disney Classics

2viente recreate Disney with classic geometric shapes. Each classic film is recognisable through the animation of simple geography, and matches with a modern colour palette and nice transitions add a unusual twist to a Disney channel advert.

50 years of Dior Eau Sauvage

This stylish promo for Dior’s “Eau Savage” takes us back to the early 2000s, when flat-shaded CG and negative space transitions were all the rage.

The Road to Rio

Art and Graft produce another carefully design short promoting the Olympics in collaboration with the Lottery and ITV. A pleasant mix of 2D and 3D rendered seamlessly in a coherent design style.

Giant Ant return with another video for Costa Sunglasses, in a sunny florida setting. One simple pan, transitioning with passing elements shows a whole journey in one beautifully crafted move.

San Pellegrino ‘Dining By Starlight’

Blacklist and Studio AKA create this short for San Pellegrino. A fully 3D film but with a 3D style creates a charmingly lit environment.

BMW Ultimate Racetrack

This commercial was completed 2 years ago but now “the making of” film has been produced which gives us a fascinating glimpse into the whole process of shooting, animating, rotoscoping and compositing of the final commercial. Look at the original first and then check out “the making of“.

William Hill

Often seen as part bumpers during football matches these William Hill adverts combine live action and lots of different styles but it’s the comic strip overlays that appeal most to me.

Pernod Ricard TV

Not the newest of films here, but the designers at Parallel managed to combine actual products with collage and simple figures within a cleverly lit scene to create a unique short commercial.

The Flynn

Commercial for New York appartment blocks by Art & Graft. This strong graphic look with bright lens flares, realistic shadows and reflections and a painterly finish was created by Art and Graft and has a rare quality of equally impressive animation. Mixtape Club create an advert for American Express involving those little airfix kit style sets, popping each one up in to a nice conclusion for the scenes.

Lincoln Continental Concept

Artistic brush strokes combined with precision lines give an impressive creative feel to this car advert. Made by Block and Tackle with a good “how it was done” interview on Motionographer.

Unilever idents

From ‘Not to Scale’ and ‘Mirari’, these really nice short animations were commissioned by Ogilvy London showcasing Unilever’s messaging around sustainability.

SBS Documentary

Different, almost unnoticeable take on the pop-up book idea. Nice tracking of a plane with complex CGI makes for a nice mix.

Nice animation from simple circles for BBC.

Beautfully designed film, with a illustrative feel but created in CGI for Nature’s Path by Burcu & Geoffrey.
 

Safe and Free

Gentleman Scholar recreate the gracefulness of a large humpback whale in the freedom of a forest to promote Whale and Dolphin conservation. A technical video of some before and afters of the realistic CGI process can also be found on their site.

Kinder Chocolate

Passion Pictures works with the popular children’s book illustrator Oliver Jeffers to create animated advert’s for Kinder Bueno. A charming style with naive text recreate the excellence found in his stories.

Paypal Fast, Simple and Secure

Paypal’s TV advert tracks doodles around the presenter to animate ideas in a fun sketchy way. A white, clean room behind gives it an airy, light feel.

ANA "Service"

William Russell directs animated spots for ANA, using lines very cleverly and beautifully constructed. Another lines and dots style film like “Designed by Apple”, it uses flight paths as a concept to make the connections.

Martini Racing

Using flat colours to create a mix of 3D and 2D with transitions separating it out from a crowded genre of similar films. Screen print texture added to give it that old racing poster feel too.

Superfast Broadband

Nicely shot and conceived advert for the UK Goverment’s promotion of the latest broadband services coming our way.

How the world might be viewed in 2025. Nice graphical representation of elements together.

Sky HD "Fragments"

Parallax used to the highest degree to create these idents by Brothers & Sisters. Although looking like slowed down footage, stills were placed within a 3D environment, composited with animated details and moved with a virtual camera.

Sparkle

Animated sequence which is a very stripped down and almost abstract infographic, with echoes of Apple’s “Designed in California” animation. Other versions available to view on Vimeo.

Hand drawn cartoon elements tracked on to nicely shot footage of Paris, gives a friendly upbeat feeling to an urban landscape.

Barclays – Life Skills

Chalk board style animation by Art & Graft, describing one boy’s experience using animation of chalk lines and clever transitions.

Ikea – Stills

Model mock ups by Rural Lee for a film for IKEA. The film would have revealed a mini world inside each area of storage.

The Scarecrow

The team behind the hugely successful Chipotle film (watch it here) are back with a new film in shiny CGI. All big budget stuff here.

A Big mixture of CGI, stop motion, animation and live action seemless mix in this crafted advert for the Sun.

Plenty of ideas in this one from pop up books to 3D tracking, all explaining the new mini, all as a model on an inventor’s desk.

Anchor – Great Escape

We’re just about to embark on a project involving use of fuzzy felt and came upon this directed by Tony Mines for Tandem Films in Homage to the Steve McQueen motorbike sequence from ‘The Great Escape’.

A lesson in transitions here, using 2D motion graphics composited and interacting with 3D elements for a trailer for an arcade game app.

Quite a complex piece of animation built around a paper-folded world.

Cutty Sark returns

Really well captured insight into the Greenwich community and the return of the Cutty Sark after it has been restored after the fire which almost destroyed it some years ago. Apparently the work is from Armoury London and the compositing was done by Rogue Collie in Wales.

Historia branding

Idents and branding for the French History channel. Very subtle but with some very nice clever features to it, especially with the show times towards the end.

Another great infographics commercial very well executed from Tendril in Toronto.

La Poste

Another use of 3D unfolding card, getting more and more complex. A small world is unraveled in a small fresh colour scheme with wonderful camera movements.

Toyota: Stories of Better

Telling the story of a Toyota, the “open book” idea is used again, but with ink and more of a travel guide. The apply a variety of techniques on a standard theme as the video progresses.

Planet IFE

A great little promotional video from Binalogue, relating the pleasures of Planet IFE an inflight entertainment & advertising company.

Zinio Reader

Nice combination of 2D and 3D to create a hi-tech styled commercial for a magazine app.

More difficult than you would imagine to make. Rotating landscape cube.

A simple take on the fold ’em up, fold ’em down style, but adding in touchscreen style wipes.

Cracker Barrel

Clever use of super-imposing and tracking for this advert. Using boxes to separate action and have elements interact between them in a rustic setting.

Smart Car Diorama

A cardboard diorama. Always nice. A simple model, with the softness of cardboard makes a industrial production process seem friendly.

Moleskin: Lego Pitch

Simple animated lego characters sit on an environment of an animated moleskin background. Fun and quirky with simple but sophisticated animation.

iPhone Diorama

Student Film (applause) by a Mike Ko. Mocking up and tracking a 3D diorama on an iPhone. Very nice on the close up with the textures.

John Kelly’s film advertising for Chipotle. Using simple character animation and flat colouring turns a narrative quite graphic look for a stop-frame film.
